Well, here is a pic of the 2019 Saturday Sampler project, which I have named "Newfoundland Star".  My mother and I were both born in Newfoundland, the easternmost province of Canada.  The quilt on the left is made in Moda's "Ballycastle", a lovely collection featuring blues, creams and soft yellows.  The quilt on the right will be in gorgeous batiks.

Here is how it will go!  Sign up for $30 Registration fee and pay $6 for your first block.  Attend the first meeting in November (first Saturday at 9:30am) and you will get your first block.  Attend the meeting and learn how to put the block together and hear about the new stuff in the shop.  When you come to the second meeting in December, bring your first block, all sewn up, and you will get your next block for free.  If you miss a meeting, you just need to pay $6 per block to get caught up.

The setting kit costs $300 which includes everything for this 95"x95" quilt top including binding.  If you purchased the setting kit, you may attend, at no additional cost, any of the monthly hands on workshops which will cover how to construct a portion of the setting kit.  The Feathered Star center section will be taught over 3 months.  Starting in January, we will host the first workshop right after the Saturday Sampler meeting.  You must sign up ahead of time so that we can ensure that there is enough room to accommodate everyone.  We will host two workshops, one on the first Saturday and the second some other time during the month.

You may sign up by calling the shop at 281.491.0016.  Because Moda prints their fabric collections to order, we will not be able to get more of this collection if you decide to participate next year.  The fabric will be gone.  So sign up soon!  We'd love to have you!

So here is a pic of the actual One and Done project - all precut - all batiks scheduled for Saturday,  September 15; 10-5. This version shows a light background.  You choose the background that you want to use.  It will feature 8 pieced blocks in bright Autumnal batiks.  Also included will be an array of pre-fused, pre cut fall leaves to be arranged in any way you want.  The side borders will feature bright strips in the same fabrics.  The pieced leaves can be made using Studio 180 Corner Beam tool, but it isn't required.

Of course lunch, snack and goody bag will be provided for every attendee.  Cost for this event is $150; size of the project is approximately 60" square.  Sign up by calling the shop at 281.491.0016 or come in to make your paid reservation.  It's a lot of fun..check out our Facebook page to see pics of the last event.

Mystery Quilt #13 is in the books.  This quilt was one of the most exciting finishes, as the optical illusion that suggested curved piecing was revealed.  Finished quilt tops for the Viewer's Choice voting is Saturday, August 25, 2018.  Remember, the winner of the Viewer's Choice will receive a Quilter's Emporium gift certificate.  Good luck quilters!   Karen Johnson was the first quilter to turn in a completed quilt top for Mystery #13, and is the winner of a Quilter's Emporium gift certificate.  Mystery Quilt #14 begins Saturday, August 25th.  We are offering a choice of a twin or a double sized quilt.  Fabric requirements are available in the shop.  As an option, we plan to support the use of your Studio 180 rulers for our new project.  Come in and make your selections, and make sure to have the staff register you for your preferred session.  Space is limited.  Hope to see you Saturday, August 25th at 9:00 a.m. p 11:00 a.m. OR 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

 Notes from Joey...

This poor guy needs a home!  He is one of hundreds of animals that are in one of the shelters in our area.

This weekend is "Clear the Shelters" Saturday!  Woo-hoo!  That is a great chance for you to go to an animal shelter near you and adopt a dog or cat FOR FREE.

Jack, Sophie and I came from the Houston SPCA and we are  grateful for taking us in and introducing us to Mama and Papa.  I believe that every dog and cat deserves a home where they are loved and cared for, don't you?

So please, if you have space in your home and hearts to adopt a homeless animal, please go and visit a shelter near you.  You just may find your forever friend!

and kisses, Joey

As always, please keep an eye open for children or animals locked in a hot car!  Thank you!

The Quilting Angels charity quilting bee will meet this coming Monday, August 20.  We will be doing our “even” and “odd” months out of order, due to the pillowcase sew-in next month.   So this month, we will be sewing quilt tops again.  Then we will do other sewing projects the next two months.

On Monday, all you need to bring is your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.  We have many quilt tops cut out ready to sew up with sewing instructions included.  We are delighted to welcome new quilters any time!  There will be quilted quilts ready to have the bindings sewn down by hand as well.  (Thank you Peggy for sewing those bindings on for us.)  Just bring your needle if you would like to sew bindings; we have a couple bags of thread colors.

Thank you so much for the volunteer longarmers who have helped so much that I actually feel “caught up”, and not so overwhelmed now!  Thank you Vikki, Norine, Lisa, and Sandy. Thanks also to Kasey, who has done some machine quilting of lap quilts for us.

Please see the newsletter article that follows for details of the Friday, September 14 pillowcase sew-in, hosted by Karen and Barbara.  I have learned through the last several years that very few people come to the charity quilts sewing day on the Monday following the pillowcase challenge day the previous Friday. So that will be the charity quilting day for September.  One big sewing day a month is enough!

If you would like to reach me , you can email Susan at

Stitch love and a prayer into your quilts, Susan

Today I picked up a donation of fabric from a lady that found out about us through Houston Hospice.  She told me that Houston Hospice treated with her Mom with such kindness.  She was very touched that by the pillowcase they gave to her Mom. While she does not sew, her Mom did.  She wanted her Mom’s fabric to come to us to share the kindness.

She also has 2 sewing machines that she would like to donate.  She is looking for a school, church or other organization that might be able to use them.  Please contact Karen at for more information.

Don’t for get our 5th annual Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon is just around the corner.  The fun starts at 9:00AM on Friday, September 14 and we will sew until 9:00AM Saturday, September 15.  The event will be held at Quilter’s Emporium.  This is a drop in and sew event.  A few of us will work for the full 24 hours, but most people stop in and work for an hour or so.   We will need help pinning, sewing, cutting and especially ironing (that takes the most time).  We have successfully made at least 300 pillowcases each year at this event.  We hope to meet or beat that number this year. Please mark your calendars for September 14 for lots of fun.  Watch for more information in future newsletters.

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated fabric over the last few weeks.  Your generosity is allowing us to keep the drawer at QE full and get a nice stash of kits ready for the Sew-A-Thon.  Thank you too for all the pillowcases you continuously make year after year.  Your work is appreciated so much by the recipients.  We are so blessed to have so many of you participate in making this project successful.
